The Lantern Festival, also known as Shangyuan Festival, Little First Month, Yuanxi festival or Lantern Festival, is one of the traditional Chinese festivals, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. The 15th day of the first lunar month is the night of the first full moon in a year, so the 15th day is called the Lantern Festival. According to Taoist "sanyuan", the 15th day of the first lunar month is also called "Shangyuan Festival". Since ancient times, the custom of Lantern Festival has been based on the custom of watching lanterns.
The formation of the Lantern Festival custom has a long process, according to general information and folk legends, the fifteenth day of the first month in the Western Han Dynasty has been taken seriously, Emperor Wudi on the first month of the xin night in the Palace of Ganquan "Tai Yi" activities, is regarded as the first day of the worship of god. However, it was not until after the Han and Wei dynasties that the Lantern Festival really became a folk festival. The custom of burning lanterns on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month is related to the spread of Buddhism to the east. During the Tang Dynasty, Buddhism flourished, and officials and common people generally "burn lamps to offer Buddha" on the 15th day of the first lunar month, and Buddhist lamps were all over the people. Since the Tang Dynasty, the Lantern Festival has become a legal matter, and gradually become a folk custom.
The Lantern Festival is one of the traditional festivals in China, the cultural circle of Chinese characters and overseas Chinese. The Lantern Festival is mainly a series of traditional folk activities, such as watching lanterns, eating glutinous rice balls, guessing lantern riddles and setting off fireworks. In addition, the Lantern Festival in many places also increased the dragon dance, lion dance, walking on stilts, land boat, yangko dance, taiping drum and other traditional folk performances. In June 2008, Lantern Festival was selected into the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
